Valeria Oliva, PhD | ContactValeria is originally from Rome (Italy), where she completed her BS in Biological Sciences and her MS in Neurobiology at La Sapienza University. She then moved to Bristol (UK) for her PhD, where she used fMRI to investigate the brain mechanisms behind the attentional modulation of pain. She is primarily interested in understanding how different psychological states can alter our perception of the world, especially in the context of pain. In San Diego she is investigating the brain mechanisms behind pain relief after training in mindfulness meditation. In her free time, she likes hiking, making fresh pasta, practicing karate and juggling.

Alessandro AllenAlessandro is a third-year undergraduate student at UCSD studying Neurobiology. He has a broad range of interests within neuroscience including understanding mental illness, understanding consciousness, and exploring the practical applications of mindfulness-meditation. He hopes to pursue these interests in his career after college. Alessandro loves soccer, music, and spending time in nature.
Noah HollenbackNoah graduated from Humboldt State University in 2021 with a Bachelors in psychology and a minor in chemistry. There he worked in Dr. Ethan Gahtans behavioral neuroscience lab, using zebrafish to access the impact of the KCC2 protein on development. Noah is hoping to pursue a PhD in psychopharmacology, and is most fascinated by psychedelic research and mechanisms. In the past Noah has also helped on research projects at SFSU, CSUSM as well as for the non-profit Civic Light Projects. In his free time Noah enjoys playing disc-golf with friends and family, as well as reading and hiking.

Daniel BarrowsDaniel recently transferred from Santa Monica College and is completing his final year as a neurobiology undergraduate at UCSD, applying to the BS/MS program. He is looking forward to pursuing his master’s and would like to focus on the psychopharmacology of psychedelics. He's also excited to learn more about meditation/pain research and computational neuroscience. In his off time, Daniel enjoys playing music, traveling, soccer, surfing, and hiking.
Nikhil JampanaNikhil studied Human Biology at UCSD (’21), with servings of History and Global Health. His research interests include the neural mechanisms of mindfulness meditation, psychedelics, and empathy, and how they can be leveraged to neuroplastic/therapeutic effect in the context of depression, anxiety, trauma, and chronic pain. You can find him reading, laughing over a stand-up special, and eating too many popsicles.
